The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has identified two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka, according to a statement released on Monday. The cases were uncovered during routine monitoring of respiratory viruses as part of ICMR's nationwide surveillance efforts, the Union Health Ministry confirmed.

A three-month-old female infant with a history of bronchopneumonia tested positive for HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. She has since been discharged, the ministry noted. In a separate case, an eight-month-old male infant, also with a history of bronchopneumonia, was diagnosed with HMPV on January 3. He is currently recovering, according to the health authorities.

The ministry clarified that neither child has a history of international travel, suggesting local transmission of the virus.

Understanding Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)

Human Metapneumovirus is a respiratory pathogen known to cause flu-like symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Common symptoms include cough, nasal congestion, sore throat, and fever. In some cases, individuals may experience wheezing, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, or pneumonia.

HMPV is particularly concerning for infants under one year, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems, as they are at higher risk for severe respiratory complications. The virus is primarily transmitted through direct contact with infected persons or contaminated surfaces and is most active during the winter and early spring seasons.

The Health Ministry highlighted that HMPV is a global concern, with cases reported in multiple countries, including India. However, data from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and ICMR indicate no significant increase in cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) within the country.

ICMR continues to monitor respiratory viruses through its established surveillance systems. The organization plans to track HMPV trends throughout the year to assess its impact on public health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been providing updates on respiratory viruses, including HMPV, as part of its global health initiatives. Meanwhile, a recent nationwide preparedness drill conducted in India has underscored the country’s readiness to manage potential surges in respiratory illnesses. The Health Ministry assured that public health measures are in place to address any emerging challenges.
